Dr. Emi Shimizu has a dual position of associate professor at both the Oral Biology department and the Endodontics department in Rutgers School of Dental Medicine. She is also an associate editor of the journal, International Endodontic Journal, Frontiers in Dental Medicine Frontiers in Cell and Developmental Biology and an editorial board member of Journal of Dental Research Journal of Endodontics. To date, she has published 55 peer-reviewed research articles, reviews, and book chapters. She has been obtained several grants from NIH/NIDCR, American Association of Endodontists Foundation and Colgate Palmolive. The overall goal of her research is to regenerate a pulp-dentin complex in situ within the dental pulp space, using endogenous stem cells (cell homing) and/or exogenous stem cells, employing bioactive hydrogel scaffolds. Further, she has been studying the mechanism of tertiary dentin formation using genetic mouse models. She has accumulated advanced knowledge, skills, and research experiences of molecular biology, bone biology, tooth anatomy, and stem cell biology for more than 20 years.
