Updated instrument retrieval techniques

Led by: Yoshi Terauchi

Overview: An instrument fracture is very frustrating. Instrument retrieval is even more frustrating and considered more challenging than any other procedure in endodontics. The literature shows that when NiTi instruments fracture, they mostly fracture in the apical one-third or beyond a curve of the canal because of the super-elastic property of NiTi instruments. Although the success rates of instrument retrieval with ultrasonics alone are very high in the range of 80 to 90 %, ultrasonic retrieval attempts are deemed to be unpredictable in terms of time and dentin sacrifice. It is also essential to preserve as much tooth structure as possible to prevent root fracture and perforation. In the workshop unique updated techniques for instrument retrieval using a new “TFRK” or martensitic NiTi rotary files will be shown to make the instrument retrieval highly predictable and minimize dentin sacrifice. The instrument retrieval techniques presented in the workshop are also supported by a recent study published from JOE because of predictability and higher success rates compared to the traditional techniques.
Aim: To learn updated instrument retrieval techniques

Learning Outcomes
1. describe how to make an accurate diagnosis for instrument retrieval
2. make a predictable treatment plan for instrument retrieval
3. understand the concept of instrument retrieval
4. make it minimally invasive and predictable to prepare the canal for instrument retrieval
5. choose the best technique to make the removal attempts successful

Improving your chances of publication in the leading Endodontic journals. An interactive workshop

Led by: Venkatesh Nagendrababu and Anil Kishen
Speakers: Venkateshbabu Nagendrababu; Giampiero Rossi-Fedele; Sebastian Bürklein; Anil Kishen
Overview: Faculty members, clinicians, and students invest significant time in preparing manuscripts on Endodontics. Recently, there has been a notable increase in submissions to top endodontic journals. Unfortunately, many of these manuscripts are rejected due to various issues identified during the peer review process by reviewers, associate editors, and editors-in-chief. This workshop is designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of the publication process and to offer strategies for enhancing the quality of manuscripts.
Aim: This workshop will offer a comprehensive understanding of the publication process, as well as strategies to enhance manuscript content, thereby increasing the likelihood of acceptance in leading journals in Endodontics.
Learning outcomes: Upon completion of the workshop, participants will be able to:

• understand the publication process

• understand the significance of the reporting guidelines

• compose a manuscript for publication

• respond to the reviewers' comments

Programme Outline:

14:00 - 14:30:  Introduction about the workshop Understanding the Publication Process Conducting a Literature Review Reporting guideline (Venkateshbabu Nagendrababu)
14:30 - 15:30:  How to write a compelling introduction and discussion (Giampiero Rossi-Fedele)
15:30 - 16:00:  Study design, statistics and ethical considerations (Sebastian Bürklein)
16:00 - 17:00: What do reviewers look for in your manuscript? (Anil Kishen)

Certified and specialist member workshop: Management of calcification in endodontics

Led by: Peter Kiefner and Antonis Chaniotis
Overview: Hard tissue apposition along the root canal walls is a slow, normally occurring physiological aging process. In response to tooth wear, local deposition of hard tissue may also occur in the pulp at a slow pace.  Sometimes, the rate of hard tissue deposition acceleration may seem to be uncontrolled after dental trauma, auto-transplantation, and orthodontic therapy, leading to rapid partial or total obliteration of the root canal space. This situation is called calcific metamorphosis (CM) or pulp canal obliteration (PCO). Although the incidence of pulpal necrosis in these teeth is believed to be infrequent, conventional endodontic therapy in severely calcified canals poses extreme difficulties and a higher risk for procedural accidents.
Aim: This workshop aims to describe and practice the available approaches for the predictable negotiation of calcified canals.

Hands on practice: Free hand approach - Static guidance - Dynamic guidance
